The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are group of islands in the Bay of Bengal, some one thousand kms from the mouth of the Hooghly River. The two islands are actually the peaks of a submerged mountain range which extends from Myanmar to Indonesia.
These islands are encompassed by three different ecosystems – tropical forests, mangroves and coral reefs, which support a staggering variety of plant and animal species. Many parts of the islands are off –limit to preserve their rich bio-diversity.
There are two districts viz. South Andaman District and Nicobar District, both comprising of some more than 500 islands. These districts are administered by Deputy Commissioners appointed by the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
